Stevie Ray Vaughan was an
electric blues/rock guitarist. He began his recording career in 1983 and after 7 short years he had conquered the music world, winning 3 Grammy Awards, and had succeeded in conquering his greatest foe, substance abuse.
Though Stevie's genre of choice was blues, he could play anything. In an all-too-short career, he had proven to many that he was not only the greatest electric guitarist alive, but of all times.
In 1990, at the paramount of his career, Stevie was tragically killed in a helicopter accident. The list of those who have paid him tribute reads like the whose-who of the music world. Among them are Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, John Lee Hooker, Gregg Allman, B.B. King, Albert King, Steve Winwood, Jackson Brown, Art Neville, Joe Satriani, Lonnie Mack, Albert Collins, W.C. Clark, newcomers Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Johnny Lang, and countless others including Stevie's older brother Jimmie. Stevie Ray Vaughan received two more Grammy Awards (totaling 5) for his work on the posthumously released CD, Family Style. If you've never heard him play the guitar, then you've never heard it done right.
Four Stevie Ray Vaughan Discs Reissued With Bonus
Tracks
Due in stores March 23rd!
Fans of legendary blues axe grinder Stevie Ray Vaughan
will be happy to know that the posthumous releases
will continue in March 1999.
To coincide with the South By Southwest music
conference in Austin, Texas,
Epic/ Legacy Records will release the first four
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble albums with
previously unreleased bonus tracks on March 16 (SXSW
kicks off on March 17), according to a spokesperson at
Epic/ Legacy.
Pending approval from Jimmie Vaughan, Stevie's
brother, the albums will include four bonus tracks
each, culled from B-sides and previously unreleased
live tracks or studio tracks. The albums getting a
second life include 1983's Texas Flood, 1984's
Couldn't Stand the Weather, 1985's Soul to Soul, and
1989's In Step. The reissues with include all new
deluxe booklets and liner notes.
In addition to the reissues, Epic/ Legacy will also
release Greatest Hits Volume II on the same day, the
follow-up to 1995's Greatest Hits. No word yet on the
track listing for the new collection.
This could be the so-called box set
on whch Jimmie Vaughan and Bob Irwin were supposedly working. Irwin had said that there would be 3 or 4 CDs and that those would consist of 70% unissued material. Well, here's to hoping that this is not the box set, and that this is just an added bonus for SRV fans.
Update!
A Flood of Reissues
The latest items in the posthumous Vaughan canon are remastered
"expanded editions' of the four studio albums he released before his
1990 death; 1983's Texas Flood, 1984's Couldn't Stand the Weather,
1985's Soul to Soul and 1989's In Step, which hit stores March 23.
Also due that day is The Real Deal: Greatest Hits Volume II.
"Jimmie Vaughan has unearthed a ton of stuff," says Tom Cording,
spokesman for Epic/Legacy. "There'll be three bonus tracks per record,
including some live stuff and some in-studio stuff and even some studio
dialogue with Stevie talking about playing the guitar."
Produced by Bob Irwin and engineered by Vic Anesini -- the duo behind
1997's much-praised Byrds reissues -- the expanded discs will also
include new essays by Billboard editor Timothy White, Jaco author Bill
Milkowski and Austin Chronicle columnist Michael Ventura.
The long-discussed box set is now tentatively slated for a Christmas
release. "The box set is very much still alive. There are some amazing
live recordings and some great Hendrix covers that will be on it," says
Mr. Cording. (contributed by Tyler Weaver)
